Human cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes. Each pair has a distinctive size and banding pattern. The 23rd pair is special -- they're known as the sex chromosomes. Females have matching "X" sex chromosomes. In males, the larger "X" chromosome is paired with a smaller Y chromosome.
